Forest fires are not always a bad thing! They are necessary for the creation of different habitats and the return of nutrients to the soil. Wildflowers can be one of the first species to colonize after a fire, creating a new habitat that is home to new organisms. This kind of habitat succession is necessary for healthy ecosystems, and when we surpress forest fires we stop it from happening. In addition, fire supression allows fuel to accumulate so that when fires occur they are much more intense than they normally would be. This is why scientists will conduct controlled burns so that natural habitat succession can occur and fuel for forest fires does not build up.
